Guest Post with J.R. Barrett: My Not So Secret Love Affair

I’m pleased to welcome one of my favorite authors, Julia Barrett, to the blog today. She’s talking about her new release, Incorporeal, and what led her to write it. Please welcome Julia!

If you read my blog, you might think baseball is my not so secret love, and yes, it is, but long before I fell in love with the Zen of baseball, I was hooked by science fiction and fantasy, and maybe a little gothic horror.

H. P. Lovecraft.  Robert Louis Stevenson.  Jules Verne.  Rudyard Kipling – The Man Who Would Be King.  Edgar Allan Poe.  Henry James.  Mary Shelley.  Lord Dunsany.  C.S. Lewis.  Ursula le Guin.   Madeline L’Engle.  Robert Heinlein.  Frank Herbert.  Thomas Pynchon.  Bram Stoker.  T.H. White.  J.R.R. Tolkien.  The list goes on and on.  

I think it all started in the library with The Wizard of Oz and Journey to the Mushroom Planet.  Hooked!  Or you might say…captured by limitless possibilities.

I’m fascinated by the way life imitates art.  Star Trek had hand-held communicators.  We have similar cell phones.  Video conferencing?  Science fiction created video screens first.  Flying machines exist, not only in science fiction, but in ancient mythology all over the world.  Ghosts, vampires, witches, werewolves, the undead, time travel, the Loch Ness monster…all the stuff of legend, now the stuff of paranormal romance.

The very moment I was told the ghost romance I had in mind would never work – no conventional HEA, I knew I had to write it.  If reading science fiction and fantasy taught me anything, it’s that the impossible is rarely impossible.

Sara is a human woman who can see ghosts.  Nathan is an incorporeal ghost who comes to life in her arms.  Sara can’t resist his charms.  Frankly, I couldn’t either.  I had to write their love story.  Sara and Nathan might not have a conventional HEA, but I knew they’d find a way to be together forever.

Sara Wise is sick of ghosts. They’ve haunted her since she was a child, destroying her family, endangering her life. When an incorporeal being appears in her shower, she curses him soundly and orders him out, but this ghost is sticky. Not only does he invade her shower, he moves into her home, invading her dreams, sharing her bed. The reluctant Sara finds herself falling in love with a dead man.

Despite Sara’s objections, Natan de Manua isn’t permitted to leave. Protecting the woman is both his penance and his means to redemption.  She’s not easy to protect, she fights him nearly every step of the way, except in her bed. Nathan may have come to regain his soul, but instead he risks losing his heart.
